Love this purifier
This MSR Guardian is not the smallest or lightest purifier, but it does a great job at what it is supposed to do. It takes a short amount of time to pump the purified water in a bottle. Even better is if your bottle or container has a wide mouth that can be screwed on to the device. Otherwise, you play a balancing act pumping and holding the container for the water so that is will not spill out.Doesn’t need a deep water source to be able to pump. Really like how it backflushes to keep it clean. You do want to make sure you keep this maintained over the years, especially if you do not use it all the time. It will keep some water in the device and you do not want it to dry out. There is a maintenance kit available to keep other working parts moving smoothly. It is very pricy, but it does a great job. It really makes the water taste great, and you have the peace of mind that you are getting clean water. While it is heavy for backpacking, I think the weight is worth it. I am very happy with it.

Great product, i have been testing it out over …
Great product, i have been testing it out over the last few days and the result is always the same, good tasting clean water no matter the water source and FAST. I read many reviews on water filters before purchasing one and this one was at the top of most list’s and noted its down side was the size of the device upon receiving the guardian i would have to disagree the size is comparable to most systems and simple as could be for use. I will be taking it into the field on Friday for a week long backpack trip and after that i will comment more about the durability of the unit. As of now i am pleased with the quality it seams well built and easy to maintain and can be taken apart and serviced in no time if need be. It also came with a nice zip up carry case. I would say its well worth the money and will probably last me forever.Returned home from the trip, after a good field test I would go with 4.5 starts but will leave it a five. Wear the pump handle attaches to the plunger is a mixture of steel and plastic parts it held up fine but it is all held together with a plastic C clip, if you get much more than a moderate pump pace the clip hangs up and pops loud, I am certain this clip will fail and break at some point so i plan on finding a spare. The clip is basic something you would find at a auto parts store for cents and will be metal 🙂 the other thing i noticed in the promotion video for the pump it says as long as the filter on the end is wet it it will pump only water and no air….that is mostly true but on 2 occasions it pulled air and we were forced to hold it under water and it primed up and was fine. Other then the clip it pumps and cleans water very fast and efficient its quiet and easy to set up and put away i would buy it again.

Great purchase
We do not like to carry extra drinking water with us in our small camper. This is perfect to filter the water from the campground. The water tastes good and it is quick and easy to use.

DON’T get Giardia. DO get this filter.
AWESOME. Has been the sole source of water on 3 backcountry trips through the Boundary Waters for 4-6 thirsty guys and nobody has ever gotten sick. One campsite was situated ON TOP OF A BEAVER DEN, where the beavers angrily circled me as I pumped water from their stick munching spot, and still nobody got Giardia. Speaking of which, have you ever had Giardiasis? It’s not great. I once ate nasty snow in the North Cascades because I did a poor job of managing water, and 2 weeks later I had to time the 30 minutes between trips to the toilet to rush down to the pharmacy for Flagyl. DON’T GET GIARDIA. DO GET THIS WATER FILTER.

Comes in a nice zip up case with a fine mesh screen on …
I picked this up to have access to clean water for a group while backpacking/traveling or for emergency conditions where public water is contaminated. Think of boil water advisories when the local water main has broken. Remember this is a mechanical filter and that chemical or radiological contaminants are NOT removed by mechanical filters. This won’t help you fix the water in Flint, MI or magically turn seawater into potable water.Eager to see how this works, I ran a little test with a water source I know is contaminated with coliform bateria. I took samples from the source and from the water filtered by this unit. Running the samples and a control through a test kit showed the filtered water was indeed bacteria free.Ultralight backpackers will balk at the weight but for me I appreciate the ease of use. I was surprised a how fast the filtered water comes out. Fits my Nalgene bottle perfectly. I don’t have to mess with bags or wait around for gravity to work. Hose is long enough so you don’t fall in the pond or river trying to scoop up water.Comes in a nice zip up case with a fine mesh screen on top so when you put it away the hose can dry off with out contaminating the rest of your stuff. Be sure to buy the annual maintenance kit which is sold separately – it contains o rings and other goodies to maintain your pumpI like that this filters viruses. I wish I had had this on recent trips to India and the DR. Now I am better prepared! I also appreciate the fact that it backflushes itself on every stroke. Very clever. This thing is pretty expensive but it is so easy to use I am glad to have it.

1st unit leaked on arrival, 2nd unit great
I have used a Saywer mini before this, and after using it backpacking, I’ve come to the conclusion that getting a pump filter, especially for a group, is worth the weight just to not spend figurative and some times literal hours filtering water. Got this one after reading multiple reviews and seeing everyone compare filters to the MSR guardian, figured it’d have to be good.First unit: Just tried out the filter for the first time, I had high expectations for the price, but it’s leaking from the pump handle, I tried the trouble shooting steps for the pump head, and applied new silicone grease, seals and cleaning it several times, but it still leaked. It looks like the piston nut may be slightly damaged which is why it isn’t getting a good seal. I ended up returning the filter to Amazon, hopefully I’ll get a full refund for it.2nd unit: I did get another unit from Amazon, and this one doesn’t leak! Much nicer and meets my expectations, taking it on a trip soon, so I’ll get some field testing with it. I will say this – this filter is Fast!! Light years faster than my Sawyer mini, hopefully the leaky first unit was just a fluke and this 2nd one holds up well

Love It!!
Purchased this pump after much research. I have been using the MSR Miniworks for years and have loved it. Hike a lot in Hoosier National Forest and pump from lakes and ponds when streams go under ground. The miniworks worked but had to be cleaned every 28-29 strokes due to sediment. I have used the Guardian on two trips since the 1st of Dec (2016) in the same lake and pond. WOW!! First time in 20 to 30° temperatures and I pumped and filled a 48 ounce Nalgene bottle in the time it took my Miniworks to fill about 8-10 ozs ( then had to be taken apart and cleaned). Just used it the past two days and woke up to -1°F and did not stick the Guardian in my sleeping bag like I would’ve the Miniworks and it was a block of ice, nothing would function or move on the pump. Stuck it between my layered clothing while cooking breakfast and it worked better than great. My brother had just purchased another expensive brand and he couldn’t get it to thaw even after sitting it next to the fire. My Guardian prefilter was completely covered in mucky settlement and was easily washed off by just pumping the extra water out and letting it hit the prefilter. Now to the comments on the filter O ring. Yes mine unscrewed at the bottom this trip I believe mostly due to the temperatures. But just looking at it and seeing the large black rubber ring that attaches to your bottles I surmised “hey that looks like a handle thingy with texture to turn with my hand”. So once I used it to screw on and screw off the pump and not using the filter body it worked great. Yes they are pricey and like most people I was going to wait a couple years until they came down in price but I’m really glad I didn’t.

Best purchase I’ve ever made for backpacking and hiking
This is by far the best purchase I’ve made out of all of the purchases I’ve made in buying adventure gear at places like REI, Cabelas, and Amazon. I’ve taken the Guardian on all of my backpacking trips for the past 2 summers. I also regularly take it car camping, hiking, canoeing, fishing, etc. This is one of my top 5 favorite adventure gear items that I own and take it every where I go. I don’t know what I would do without it. I plan on taking it to Europe this summer as well.I was initially hesitant in making this purchase due to the price being $350, but have never looked back. I can honestly say it is one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. If you are on the verge of making a decision like I was at the time, I definitely (100%) think you should purchase it. You will not regret it. If you spread the cost over the 5-10yr lifespan of the product, then it is extremely easy to justify the cost.It is by far better than a lifestraw and other pumps out there. This is the best water purifier on the market for these reasons: it is the fastest for pumping water, the easiest to use, will filter through dirt, and filters the most contaminants (besides chemicals) vs. other filters on the market. For those reasons, I without a doubt recommend this! 5 stars!

Good clean water
I took this down to the main river in Iowa which is flooding right now it is a mud River and has everything you could think of floating in it pump the water straight out of it and into a container and I and two friends gave it a smell and taste test and they said it smelled and tasted like good clean water what more can I say about it then it is a must-have survival item

When I first opened the box and tried out this product I had a slight problem. But now I really love this product.
When I first opened the box and tried out this product I had a slight problem. When I ordered the Guardian, I saw that other reviewers had complained about the water coming out of the seal between the water outlet area(the filter cartridge) and the filter housing. It was the only thing I was nervous about in all the research I had done. Unfortunately I had this problem. I also did a “purifier integrity test” as described in the manual and found that my filter was letting unfiltered water through. I immediately called MSR/Cascade Designs toll free number. I was able to speak to a live person almost instantly (which is surprising now days). The gentleman explained to me that if the bottom section of the filter gets over tightened it interferes with the seal. I loosened the filter cartridge (the black plastic part that screws into the filter housing). That instantly solved both of my problems. I realized this had happened when I tightened the Guardian onto my Nalgene bottle. I played around with it some more and as long as I had the filter cartridge just a little bit loose it worked fine. To keep it from getting over tightened I have wrapped it with electrical tape several times on the seam where the housing meets the insert(cartridge). I used electrical tape instead of duct tape or gorilla tape because I don’t want to leave a sticky residue if I ever decide to take it off. Gaffers tape would have worked well too, but I didn’t have any.Since I figured out those issues I have loved this thing. It feels a 1.5 liter bottle in no time. Like maybe a minute. I have found that it works best if you don’t use it in muddy water, so if you are needing to do that maybe wrap it in a bandana. Truly worth the money so far. I hope it lasts for many years.
